Runs but won't heat
On an electric dryer it's usually the heating element, the thermal fuse or a thermostat. On a gas dryer it's usually the igniter or the gas valve coils. The thermal fuse is a safety part. If it blew, something made the dryer overheat, and we find that cause before we put in a new fuse.
Two or three cycles to dry one load
This is almost always airflow: a clogged lint screen, a crushed hose behind the dryer, or a vent line packed with lint. A blocked vent is also a leading cause of dryer fires, which is why we look at it every time.
Squealing, thumping or rattling
Worn drum rollers, a failing idler pulley or a stretched belt. These get louder over a few weeks before something breaks, and catching them early is the cheaper repair.
Won't start at all
Start with the breakers. An electric dryer runs on a 240-volt circuit, and if half of it trips the dryer may not start or may run without heat. If the breakers are fine, the usual causes are the door switch, the thermal fuse or the start switch.
